Amir – Alliances, Museums, Encounters, and Relationships is a project launched in September 2018 (the name in Arabic means “prince”) and still ongoing, curated by a network of museums. Its aim is to offer cultural mediation activities led by citizens with migratory experiences.
It currently involves 25 mediators and 15 museums, collections, villages, churches, and public spaces in Florence and Fiesole. AMIR is curated by Stazione Utopia and the thematic museum network Musei di Tutti, and includes the participation of the Fiesole Museum and Archaeological Area, Museo Bandini, Museo Primo Conti, Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, Museo Novecento, Complesso di Santa Maria Novella, and Museo degli Innocenti, as well as urban walks in Florence. Other locations involved have included the Art Collection of Fondazione CR Firenze, the village of Quaracchi, the village and Church of Santa Maria a Peretola, Villa Medici La Petraia, and the Garden of the Villa Medici at Castello.
The project has collaborated with the Regional Directorate of Museums of Tuscany, the University Museum System, Case della Memoria, Lucca Archives, the Photographic Archive of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut, UniFi SAGAS, the Islamic Community of Florence, Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia, and Archivi in Rete, with the support of Regione Toscana and Fondazione CR Firenze.

AMIR FLIES TO BERLIN FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF MULTAKA

Reflecting the Future: Learning from the Past, Envisioning the Future
Multaka: Museums as Meeting Point in Berlin celebrates its 10th anniversary together with co-organizer MultakaOxford: a decade of shared stories, intercultural learning, and connections built through dialogue.
This special two-day event will take place at the Centre for Cultural Education – Haus Bastian, in the heart of Berlin’s Museum Island, with the support of the Alwaleed Cultural Network.
Multaka brings together seven active projects across six countries: Germany, England, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, and Spain. Its members include Multaka Berlin, Multaka Oxford, AMIR Project (Florence), Multaka Bern, Lucky Who Speaks Arabic (Turin), Multaka Athens, and the University of Zaragoza. The network operates in over 30 European museums and involves more than 100 mediators from diverse cultural backgrounds.
During the two days, participants will have the opportunity to join:

90-minute in-depth workshops exploring the significant legacies of Multaka Network international partners from Berlin, Florence, Oxford, Turin, and Zaragoza.

Expert panels highlighting shifts in perspective within the fields of community and culture.

Multaka tours of Museum Island, led by Berlin Multaka guides, bringing different voices and personal perspectives.

This anniversary is not only a celebration: it is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and envision the future of our shared work.
Participation is free, but registration is required by Tuesday, December 2, 2025 (or until places run out).

Activities and Meetings in Libraries and Archives
as part of the AMIR project
Since May 2025, ForGlobe has been active in all the municipalities of the Integrated Documentary System of the Florence Area (SDIAF). The project offers adult audiences a wide range of free educational programs in libraries, municipal archives, and selected cultural institutions in the territory.

The project is fully funded by Regione Toscana – PR FSE+ 2021/2027.
After nearly seven years of shifts in perspective, new approaches, and alternative narratives, it was time to change our name — or rather, to give a new meaning to our name.
Years of collective work, reflections, discussions, and sometimes heated debates made us uncomfortable, as the old wording felt condescending and paternalistic.
For this reason, we launched a public survey to collect new words to compose our acronym, capable of reflecting the meaning of the journey we have undertaken together over these years.
On Friday, July 4 and Saturday, July 5, at the Fiesole Archaeological Area, as part of Le Notti dell’Archeologia – The Etruscans and Their Legacy (June 28 – August 3), which features special evening openings and events in museums, parks, and archaeological sites across Tuscany, AMIR, in collaboration with the Museums of Fiesole, presents:
Scapegoats and Human Sacrifices: Rites and Myths between Etruria and Ancient Greece.
Starting from an analysis of Etruscan sacrificial rituals, the conversation with AMIR project mediators invites reflections on an important theme — not only because it has deep roots in the distant past of all human societies, but also because it offers valuable insights for understanding contemporary life.
The sessions will be held at the evocative Etruscan-Roman Temple on July 4 at 5:30 PM and July 5 at 9:00 AM.
The AMIR Conversation is a free activity with limited seating.

Partendo dalle carte geografiche raffigurate in Palazzo Vecchio prenderà il via un viaggio immaginario verso le terre e le culture africane: un laboratorio di musica e ballo per incontrare storie e sonorità nuove, divertendosi.

L’arte calligrafica nel modo islamico
24 maggio ore 14 e ore 15.30
Partendo dalla lettura di alcune celebri storie del mondo arabo, i mediatori e le mediatrici Amir accompagneranno i partecipanti alla scoperta dell’alfabeto arabo, una raffinata forma di arte, le cui linee ricordano fiori, foglie e animali.
Con l’aiuto di giochi e immagini i partecipanti impareranno a scrivere da destra verso sinistra, a riconoscere alcune lettere e a trascrivere il proprio nome, usando china e pennelli.
Amir partecipa a "CulturalxCollabs - Weaving the Future"
Un progetto del Pergamon Museum di Berlino per celebrare la forza dello scambio tra culture.
Il Pergamon Museum e, con esso, il Museo d’Arte Islamica, chiude temporaneamente nell’ottobre 2023 per lavori di ristrutturazione e riaprirà nella primavera del 2027 con una mostra permanente riprogettata.

OSSERVAZIONE E DISCUSSIONE SUL PATRIMONIO CULTURALE

SABIR* | osservazione e discussione sul patrimonio culturale propone a un gruppo di studenti che frequentano il CPIA Firenze 1, un laboratorio di avvicinamento alla lettura, comprensione e interpretazione del patrimonio culturale e artistico inteso come luogo di apprendimenti multidisciplinari, interculturalità e condivisione di saperi.
Il percorso si struttura in un ciclo di incontri, visite studio, tour con le mediatrici/ori del progetto AMIR e riflessioni all'interno del gruppo e con esperte/i per parlare di arte e storia, ma anche diversità culturale, questioni di genere, processi decisionali e costruzione dei confini politici a partire dal patrimonio storico-artistico. A conclusione è prevista una visita studio di due notti presso una città d’arte in Toscana.

Case della Memoria, visite speciali condotte da mediatori/trici del progetto Amir
Raccontami la casa: un ciclo di visite speciali a Casa Guidi e a Casa-studio Bargellini, grazie a un progetto curato dall’Associazione Case della Memoria in collaborazione con Stazione Utopia, nell’ambito del progetto AMIR.
Casa Guidi in Piazza San Felice conserva le tracce della storia d’amore fra Elizabeth Barrett e Robert Browning, in cui raccontare anche della scelta di Elizabeth di schierarsi a favore delle battaglie risorgimentali e dell’abolizione della schiavitù, da cui derivava la ricchezza della sua famiglia; si prosegue poi nella Casa studio di Piero Bargellini, cattolico, scrittore, maestro di scuola, sindaco dell’Alluvione, ma anche appassionato intellettuale, fondatore e direttore della rivista Il Frontespizio, tra le principali riviste d'ispirazione cattolica in Italia nel periodo tra le due guerre. Fiero insegnante, promotore di un'educazione popolare come strumento di crescita sociale e senso civico, usò parole coraggiose per esprimere il proprio dissenso rispetto al cosiddetto "razzismo scientifico" diffuso dalla rivista "La Difesa della Razza".
Un calendario di visite speciali capaci di guardare alla storia e alla memoria della nostra città con sguardi originali e prospettive inedite capaci di animare riflessioni su temi contemporanei.

WORKSHOP
Archivi in Rete e AMIR presentano un workshop gratuito rivolto a per riflettere sulla fotografia come strumento di costruzione di rappresentazioni, fonte di memoria e oggetto per generare nuove narrazioni. Il workshop vuole essere l’occasione per guardare insieme i materiali fotografici del fondo Carlo Guidotti dell’Archivio Fotografico Lucchese, relativi all’Etiopia e all’Eritrea nel 1935-1936, durante il periodo di occupazione coloniale da parte dell’Italia. Partendo dalla consapevolezza che l’archivio fotografico non è un contenitore neutro ma uno spazio in cui si accumulano storie e punti di vista, gli incontri saranno un momento di confronto sulla fotografia, sul potere delle immagini e sulla possibilità di ricontestualizzare visioni legate al passato per dialogare con il nostro presente.
Il workshop è rivolto a persone con passato migratorio: rifugiate/i, richiedenti asilo, persone con permessi di soggiorno temporaneo o di lungo periodo, cittadine/i italiane/i, giovani delle seconde generazioni con una conoscenza dell’italiano tale da poter seguire e partecipare attivamente agli incontri. È previsto un rimborso spese per le/i partecipanti.
Il percorso è inoltre aperto, a titolo gratuito, per uditrici/uditori attive/i.
Archivi in Rete è un progetto della Scuola IMT Alti Studi Lucca in collaborazione con il Comune di Lucca volto a valorizzare il patrimonio fotografico delle istituzioni cittadine, attraverso il coinvolgimento attivo di numerosi enti conservatori e lo sviluppo di strumenti digitali, attività educative e azioni di coinvolgimento pubblico.
ENCOUNTERS IN AN ARCHIVE. OBJECTS OF MIGRATION / PHOTO OBJECTS OF ART HISTORY
A marzo 2022 alcuni mediatori e mediatrici del progetto Amir sono stati invitati alla Fototeca del Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max-Planck-Institut in occasione di un'istallazione temporanea proposta dalla Fototeca e da Massimo Ricciardo.
Massimo Ricciardo ha raccolto in Sicilia e a Lampedusa oggetti di migrati fin dal 2013; nell’installazione Encounters li fa dialogare con fotografie della Fototeca del Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz. Il progetto genera quesiti di stringente attualità intorno a questi oggetti “parlanti”, evidenziando le tassonomie che regolano ogni archivio, ma anche le società contemporanee.
I dialoghi iniziati intorno all’installazione di Ricciardo proseguono in un libro appena pubblicato: questa polifonia di voci riecheggia nelle visite-evento.

In occasione del corso di formazione per guide turistiche, insegnanti, educatori ed educatrici museali ideato e sviluppato dalla Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano e Stazione Utopia per nome e per conto dell'Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore di Firenze, Sanaa, mediatrice Amir e responsabile culturale della Comunità islamica di Firenze partecipa come relatrice al'incontro:
“Altri sguardi: conoscere per comunicare”
L’arte ha un grande potere comunicativo: racconta storie e trasmette valori. Ogni persona può riconoscersi in un’opera d’arte, trovandoci qualcosa che le appartiene; per questo è un oggetto interculturale di per sé e un “luogo” privilegiato per l’incontro. In questa attività Sanaa Mohamed El Amin ci guida in un percorso che, partendo da alcune opere del Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, affronta temi legati al dialogo interreligioso e crea ponti tra la dottrina cristiana e i dettami del Corano, cogliendo aspetti comuni e differenze, tenendo conto delle diverse sensibilità e ricordandoci che Cristianesimo e Islam sono sistemi di pensiero e di fede nati e sviluppatisi nel seno di un’unica grande civiltà mediterranea.

Amir offers a series of free special visits and workshops for schools, summer camps, families, and after-school programmes. It is an opportunity to get to know the museums, collections and monumental complexes in Florence and Fiesole together with Amir’s mediators.
AMIR4ALL has been made possible thanks to funding from the Fondazione CR Firenze in the framework of “PARTECIPAZIONE CULTURALE [CULTURAL PARTICIPATION]”, the thematic tender that the Fondazione dedicates to supporting cultural programmes aimed at enhancing the active participation of the local community and the social inclusion of outlying areas.

XVIII Action Week against Racism
2022
On the occasion of the event, Amir offers an extensive and varied programme, titled Inform Perform Transform, Ri-visitare il patrimonio culturale [Re-visit the cultural heritage], which seeks to explore the dynamics that the presence of hitherto excluded individuals and narratives engender in museum policies of valorisation and transmission of knowledge. Acting as a sort of leavening, the presence of people traditionally excluded from the cultural process in fact encourages a radical transformation in the practices of museums, which from being institutions for the conservation and promotion of artistic heritage, increasingly become places capable of welcoming and producing social change.
During the Week of Action Against Racism, promoted by the UNAR - National Anti-Racial Discrimination Office, Amir | Questions of Perspectives offers a special programme of online activities, and where possible in person, aimed at school children and after-school pupils, adults and museum professionals, to look at cultural heritage as the result of the centuries-long mixing and meeting of people, values and symbols, an opportunity for dialogue and education against racism and for intercultural comparison.
MINI VIDEO SERIES
Between the 16th and 18th centuries, geographical discoveries opened the way for princes and lords to an unknown horizon of lands, peoples, cultures, art objects and botanical species from distant and exotic worlds. These range from the portrait of an albino slave who came from Angola via Portugal to join the Medici court, to citrus plants, the fragrant Jasmine of Goa, a gift from the king of Portugal to Cosimo III de’ Medici, and Chinese watercolours made especially for the European market and commissioned by the Lorraine family.
A series of videos use objects and plants preserved in the Villas and Gardens of Petraia and Castello to reconstruct the sometimes peaceful and sometimes violent history of relations between Florence and the world.

SERIES OF INTERCULTURAL WORKSHOPS
For summer 2020, the project AMIR | welcoming museums inclusion and relationships offered a series of workshops aimed at schools, summer camps, families and after-school programmes. These ranged from the decorative motifs of African textiles to the calligraphic art of the Arab world, the rhythms of Africa, and the birds of the world: an opportunity to look at art from “other” perspectives.
